Who am I?

I’m Will. I live in Seattle. I was born in 1978. I love old games.

What is this?

This blog is simply a collection of my thoughts on the various games that I happen to be playing through over time.

What type of games do I like?

I mainly focus on 8 and 16-bit games. I collect for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo, the Famicom and Super Famicom, the Sega Master System and Genesis, the Atari 2600, the PC Engine, the PlayStation 1 through 3, and the various Nintendo handheld systems (Game Boy through 3DS). I’ve noticed that my favorite games tend to be action-platformers, action RPGs, and shooters.

What’s up with the pictures? They look kind of bad.

I know, right? Every gameplay image you see here was taken by me through the ultra-sophisticated method of pointing my phone’s camera at the screen and snapping away.

How do I play?

I’m all about physical media. Hell, I still rent VHS tapes from my neighborhood video store. My preference is always to play my games on real hardware, as opposed to via emulation. Lately, I’ve also made use of a RetroDuo Portable handheld system to play some of my cartridges on the go. Very useful for long bus commutes! I don’t use cheats, codes, or glitches when playing in order to get the full intended experience. I prefer to rely on the game’s original instruction manuals rather than online FAQs and walkthroughs, again with an eye toward being as authentic as possible. Remember: Winners don’t use save states.
